Today’s Social Studies

Too many people equate social studies to what they remember from their school days—no matter how long it has been since they were in school. We need to communicate that social studies is changing to meet the challenges of today’s world. It is not enough for students to memorize dates or locations on a map. Today’s social studies provides students with the knowledge, critical thinking skills and experiences that will allow them to grow into effective citizens.

How?

NCSS defines social studies as “the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence.” That definition should be the foundation for this campaign.
It’s essential that everyone involved in this advocacy effort adapts this view of social studies to their message. Because public policy issues—such as health insurance, immigration, the global economy, and foreign policy—are multidisciplinary in nature, understanding these issues and developing solutions to them require an effective multidisciplinary preK-12 education in social studies.

Shaping Attitudes

The point of any public relations effort is to shape someone’s or some group’s attitudes regarding your organization or project.
Pat Jackson, a highly-respected PR counselor in New Hampshire, defines public relations as building relationships that change attitudes to bring about desired behaviors.
Our task is to create an accurate understanding of the value of social studies education and what people can do to help social studies educators teach students the knowledge and skills necessary to become effective citizens.
"Accurate Understanding" as defined by whom?  This is NOT okay.

And who is deciding what an "effective citizen" really looks like?  Do you think this is really bi-partisan?  My idea of 'effective"  looks totally different than that of a progressive.  Does yours?

Read between the lines.  You know EXACTLY what this says.  History is "old fashioned" just like the math that expected correct answers.   Social Studies that focuses on creating effective global citizens is where we are headed.  Global citizens who abide by and value the United Nations Earth Charter ABOVE our declaration of Independence!  That is what this is about.  This is so infuriating and insulting.  We must not rest until we put a stop to this.


Maybe you would like to attend and see a celebrity such as Oliver Stone speak to his vision of American history.  From Oliver Stone’s Untold History: A Twice-Told Tale:

I wanted to like Oliver Stone’s new documentary, The Untold History of the United States, really I did. After all, here is the maker of films positing a conspiracy to assassinate John F. Kennedy and exposing the criminal history of the Vietnam war promising to unveil the suppressed truth about America’s role in the world. With the Usual Suspects attacking Stone before the first part of this Showtime series was ever released, I was eagerly looking forward to a scathing critique of the American empire’s long bloody rampage through the history of modern times.

I should have known better.
Stone, is turns out, has been engaged in some false advertising. For what he has produced, at least so far, might be better entitled “A Twice-Told Tale” — because the narrative he presents was told first by official Soviet “historians” and their fellow-travelers in this country, albeit without the hi-tech enhancements and prominent platform available to Stone. Convicted Missouri Democrat Politician Jeff Smith Supports Supposedly Conservative Republican Jeb Bush...

...so what's the problem?  Stop labeling all education reform as being proposed/directed by ALEC, conservatives and the right-wing.  Stop closing your eyes to the fact the educational blueprint being offered is supported and being implemented by a Democratic administration.  The old labels of "liberal" and "conservative" and Democrat and Republican are outdated and archaic terms.  The only term you need to understand is "global citizenship". Determine if your politicians/lobbyists/special interest companies and individuals fit into that reform mantra.

 The post below details disgraced former Missouri Democrat politician Jeff Smith's (now a university professor) accolades for former Republican governor Jeb Bush (now an education reformer).  It seems as if this previously labeled "right-wing" former governor is embraced by a left leaning politician turned professor.  It's one big elitist party  of using taxpayer dollars and taxpayer children for their own version of what's best for local communities and children.

Questions.  Why are Republican Missouri legislators also supporting Jeb Bush's educational reform measures?  Do they want to support the same policies as former Democratic politician Jeff Smith?  Is there any difference in the Republican legislators and Jeff Smith when it comes to educational policy?  The Republicans tout "local control".  Are these reforms allowing decreased federal control and spending?

Why would a far left politician seemingly support a Jeb Bush presidency?

Overnight Sandra in Brevard sent me a link to a CNN Opinion Piece Can Jeb Bush sway the GOP on taxes, debt? By Jeff Smith. 

Bush addresses the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials Annual Conference in Lake Buena Vista
Smith was clearly lobbying for a Jeb Bush candidacy in 2016.  For the most part  the article was really complementary of the Bush family.  Smith went back as far as Prescott Bush, and pointing out that as a US Senator, back in the 1950s Prescott was somewhat of a social progressive and Eisenhower’s favorite golfing partner.

He was little bit harsh on George Bush for being too conservative, but pointed out he had to take conservative positions because at the time the Republican Party was moving in a conservative direction. Among other things Smith pointed out that:
  • Jeff Smith: No American family embodies Republicanism more than the Bushes
  • Smith: Jeb Bush, a potential 2016 presidential candidate, may be bucking the trend
  • He says Jeb Bush advocates for fiscal responsibility and standing up to Grover Norquist
  • Smith: If GOP can return to its more centrist roots, then it has a chance to win more voters

There was something about the article and Jeff Smith’s promotion of liberal social agenda that made me wonder exactly who Jeff Smith is. According to his CNN profile:

Somehow it struck me odd that is CNN profile would mention that it been a Missouri State Senator, but did not mention any party affiliation, I was also curious about The New School, so I took a quick trip to Wikipedia and found Jeb Smith had been a Democrat when he served in the State Senate, I didn’t see anything to indicate he’s changed his party affiliation.  I also found:

In September 2004, Smith submitted a false affidavit to the Federal Election Commission relating to a conspiracy with a group called Voters for Truth in the summer of 2004, to run negative advertisements against Russ Carnahan, Smith’s opponent in a congressional race. In January 2009, the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, acting upon newly discovered information, opened a criminal investigation to determine whether anyone had attempted to obstruct the Federal Election Commission proceeding. Smith was betrayed by his former associate Steve Brown after Brown was approached by the FBI to wear a wire. Brown escaped a jail sentence by betraying Smith, his longtime friend. Smith pleaded guilty to two felony counts of conspiracy to obstruct justice. Each conspiracy count is punishable by up to 20 years in prison and $250,000 in fines. He resigned effective August 25, 2009 and was sentenced to one year and a day of prison. He also was fined $50,000. His lawyer requested Smith be sent to a prison camp in Marion, Illinois.[7] However, Smith was sent to a federal prison in Manchester, Kentucky.[8] In late August 2010 he was released to a halfway house in St. Louis.[9] In November 2010, he was released early from the halfway house and is no longer in federal custody.[10][11]

Current Life

In spring 2011, Smith was married and in September, he and his wife Teresa had their first child, Charlie Wallace Smith. Smith accepted a professorial position in urban policy at the New School’s Milano Graduate School of Management and Urban Policy in New York City. At present he writes for The Recovering Politician [12]and contributes to Politico - The Arena.[13] His writing has been published in Inc. magazine [14] and praised in New York Magazine’s Approval Matrix.[15] Smith plans to publish a book, which details his time in politics and federal prison, in late 2011 to early 2012.[16

So why would a leftist professor start lobbying Jeb Bush to be the Republican candidate almost 4 years ahead of the election. The answer’s simple, first of all with the political left considers a moderate Republican now Jack Kennedy (a democrat) we have considered a flaming liberal. Over the years progressives and their communist friends have managed to drag the Republican Party establishment so far to the left that they are more liberal now than the Democrats were 50 years ago.

The Bush Clan helped enable the party to be dragged towards the left.  Smith probably sees Jeb Bush as someone a progressive could beat an election. But Smith is also looking at the possibility that Joe Biden might run for president, get the democratic nomination and get clobbered in the general election. If that happens the left want someone in the White House they can depend on to help push their educational and globalization schemes. In other words they can live with another Bush, after all it was Jeb's Father that signed Agenda 21 for the United States.

The International Child Defined in 1973. Is This the Reason for the Increased Push for Universal Preschool?

Preparing Kids: Creating an International Child instead of an American Citizen.  Get them while they're young.



I picked up the comment below from another thread.  This is a good tie-in with our post from yesterday.

 The agenda for education is unmistakable.  We just didn't pay attention before and there was no mechanism (national curriculum/standards/assessments) to deliver the agenda.

Current educational theory is provided through public school curriculum via Common Core standards.  It focuses heavily on becoming a worker in the global economy and being an international citizen as opposed to viewing oneself as an American citizen.  This globalist movement has been a long time in crafting:

Is this what you envision for your child?  If children are "insane entering school at the age of five" because of the indoctrination at the hands of their parents, then it makes perfect sense why universal preschool is being pushed for ALL children, high risk or not.

What Does The Global Citizen Think About

In life, it's important to ask questions. But even more important than that, it’s critical to ask the right questions, because if you don't ask the right question, the answer you get may be meaningless. This is especially true considering the subject of teacher accountability. The question currently being asked is, “Are teachers teaching students well enough to meet some standard?” In order to answer this question, Race To The Top has proposed a daunting series of assessments of student performance and plans to use those assessments as a measuring tool of teacher performance. Almost any study designer worth their weight will tell you that it is dangerous to use an associative value to determine another parameter’s actual value. Whether a child is learning the material is only partially attributable to how well the teacher is teaching it, but RTTP places an almost 1:1 correlation between the two.

Certainly, we all want to make sure our children are learning and don't want to discover when they graduate from public school that they have not learned anything that will either get them a job or into college. But there are very few parents out there who are lamenting, “My eighth grader can’t do a quadratic equation. What are they teaching at that school?” Yet that is lament RTTP is designed to answer.

The accountability parents are often looking for is; Is that teacher available before the big test in order to help answer my child's questions? Does that teacher belittle my child in front of the classroom? Does a teacher share his or her personal political beliefs with the class instead of teaching the subject material? Does the teacher lie to the students or bully them? Does the teacher refer to her students as parasites? Does the teacher play power games by telling students that their grade will be determined by whether the teacher likes the questions they ask, rather than by the actual work they do? Does the teacher require the students to participate in his/her pet projects as a part of their grade?

This type of accountability is almost never addressed and we therefore have teachers like the one at Parkway West Middle School who put this poster on her classroom door (it's been there for two years so far) without challenge, approval or explanation. A friend, who is also a teacher, passed this on to me because it bothered her so much. She was afraid to say anything at school since no one else had said anything, giving the impression of tacit approval.

How To Build A Global Community

Think of no one as "them"
Don't confuse your comfort with your safety
Talk to strangers
Imagine other cultures through their poetry and novels
Listen to music, you don't understand -- dance to it
Act locally
Notice the workings of power and privilege in your culture
Question consumption
Know how your lettuce and coffee are grown: wake up and smell the exploitation
Look for fair trade and union labels
Help build economies from the bottom up
Acquire few needs
Learn a second (or third) language
Visit people, places, and cultures -- not tourist attractions
Learn people's history -- redefine progress
Know physical and political geography
Play games from other cultures -- watch films with subtitles
Know your heritage
Honor everyone's holidays
Look at the moon and imagine someone else somewhere else looking at it too
Read the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Understand the global economy in terms of people, land, and water
Know where your bank banks
Never believe you have the right to anyone else's resources
Refuse to wear corporate logos: define corporate domination
Question military/corporate connections
Don't confuse money with wealth, or time with money

As opposed as they seem to be to corporate money grubbing, they are more than happy to take yours for all their products. This gem is available in bookmark and postcard form. Also available for purchase is the book We Want Freedom, a collection of memories of Mumia Abu-Jamal, the Philadelphia Black Panther who shot a police officer point blank and is currently serving a life sentence. The book gives the history of black liberation struggles. But then again, this teacher may merely be lending her support to fellow California union teachers who recently passed a resolution reaffirming their support for Mumia Abu-Jamal.

Where is this teacher’s accountability for posting this tripe on her door? I keep asking this every time I meet a school board candidate, an education reformer or a school administrator. When will teachers be held accountable for this type of propagandizing? So far I have only been met with blank stares.

There are so many pearls of wisdom in this poster I can hardly pick my favorite one. Maybe you can share your favorite one in the comment section.
